Garry Spooner Scholarship Winners Emelye, Amelia and Zeah

The Garry Spooner Scholarship has paved the way for three promising law graduates—Emelye Brown, Amelia Bryant, and Zeah Brewer—to kickstart their careers with Treadwell Gordon. Each brings their unique perspective and passion to the firm while exploring their paths in the legal profession. Here’s a closer look at their journeys so far.

Emelye Brown began her role in November 2023 as a recipient of the Garry Spooner Scholarship, continuing part-time while finishing her final year of university. Now back full-time, she reflects on 1½ years with Treadwell Gordon: “Honestly, I was surprised by how much responsibility I was given right off the bat. I expected more observational work, but instead, I’ve been trusted with research, drafting, and decision-making discussions. It’s empowering.”

While transitioning from university to legal practice has been challenging, Emelye finds satisfaction in seeing the real-world impact of her work: “The research I do and documents I prepare contribute to decisions that affect people's lives. It’s incredibly fulfilling.” She also values the mentorship and support of her team, describing her experience as a whirlwind in the best way.

And the office dog, Chloe, adds a light-hearted element to Emelye’s days: “She has this incredible ability to brighten the mood, whether it’s sneaking into offices for treats or flopping dramatically on the floor. She might be the most popular member of the team.”

Amelia Bryant has been with Treadwell Gordon for three months, stepping into litigation under Brittany and Toni’s guidance. “Being in the litigation team means every day is completely different, which I love. It’s rewarding to work on complex matters and see positive results for clients,” Amelia shares.

Great advice she has received from budding litigators? Observe different styles and take the elements that suit you: “My start in family law is a fantastic way to gain hands-on court experience and develop advocacy skills quickly.” Amelia’s appreciation for her workplace extends to the personal connections with her colleagues: “It’s amazing how the firm balances absorbing so many of us learning while staying small enough for everyone to know each other personally.”

Daily morning tea quizzes are a highlight for Amelia, where she connects with colleagues over a shared love of trivia—and a reliable sandwich in the same spot each day!

Zeah Brewer first joined Treadwell Gordon for a three-month internship last summer and returned two months ago as a law clerk under Petra’s mentorship. “The range of areas covered at the firm has made my experience so interesting. I’m still figuring out where I want to specialise,” says Zeah.

Zeah appreciates the firm’s collaborative environment, noting: “Everyone is happy to help with questions, and I’m constantly picking up tips and tricks from those who’ve been doing this for years.” She finds satisfaction in working on matters from start to finish and seeing clients happy with the service.

Getting to meet clients face-to-face has been another rewarding aspect of Zeah’s role: “Understanding their situations beyond the files adds a meaningful layer to the work we do.”

The Garry Spooner Scholarship has offered these graduates invaluable opportunities to grow professionally and connect personally within Treadwell Gordon’s supportive environment. Their shared experiences and unique perspectives highlight the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and community in the legal field.
